今日は次男（高校生）の卒業式だった。
入学式の時、ダラダラしていて厳粛な感じがまったくなかったので、正直卒業式も期待していなかった。

それが、それが。
式はとても厳かに進行され、感動的な場面もあり、とても良いものだった。
母としては息子の成長が嬉しく、感慨深く、だーだー泣かずにはいられなかった。
臨席のお母さんたちも結構肩をふるわせていたようだった。
清々しい気持ちにさせてくれてありがとうと言いたい。

一方で式の後に学年主任から、3年前入学したうちの1/4の生徒が中途退学したという事実を聞かされた。
退学者が昔に比べ増えているというのは聞いていたが、この数字はどうなんだろう・・・。
少なくとも私にとっては驚愕だった。

退学した子供たちにはそれぞれ事情があったんだろうと思う。
病気でやむなくという子もいたかもしれないし、強制退学者もいただろう。
大人から見れば正当な理由とは思えないものもあっただろう。
いずれにしても彼らはまだ子供だと私は思う。
何らかの事情で通い続けることができなかった子供たちが増えた分、差し伸べる手も増えているんだろうか。
私自身その手になっているんだろうか。いないんじゃないか。

高校生活というひとつのことをやり遂げたからこそ晴れ晴れとした今日の主役たち。
それとは対照的な1/4を思うと、沈鬱な気分にもなった1日だった。
